I feel like there are still a lot of people out there who treat reading like they’re filling out reading calendars for their teachers in order to earn a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut, in that they’ll be like “do audiobooks count as a book? do novellas count as a book? do graphic novels count as a book?”
and the answer is really that you can count whatever you want when you’re tracking your reading for yourself. nobody’s checking, it’s not a competition. you can create whatever criteria you want to (as long as you don’t expect everyone else to follow your specific criteria)
pirates of the caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man who kills indiscriminately and torments the dead as their poster villain and then you watch the movies and it’s like, “oh no, actually the worst villain in this series is a small white british man who functions as the herald of capitalism” and that was very very brave of them
